Peterhead Projects has won a Green Apple Environment Award in the national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.
Peterhead Projects Ltd ‘2ReUse’ Recycling Project competed against more than 500 other nominations and was presented with a Bronze Green Apple Award at a glittering presentation ceremony in the House of Commons in London on 14th November 2011.
Peterhead Projects launched its Community Recycling Social Enterprise ‘2ReUse Project’ in September 2010. Its aims were to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill; reduce the financial barriers for families; increase accessibility to affordable household items; and increase accessibility to volunteering opportunities. The project has developed a partnership approach to the delivery of its service and has ongoing support from the community, volunteers and a number of community planning partners, local businesses and local organisations from the Private, Public and Third Sector. The project has gone on to create, provide and support initiatives that have a measurable social, economic and environmental impact to its community.
As a result of their success, they are also being considered to represent Scotland in the European Business Awards for the Environment. The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries. The Awards are organized by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non activist, nonprofit environment group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice. Judges are drawn from the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
Peterhead Projects Development Manager, Karen Brown said “This Award gives 2ReUSE the recognition for its environmental endeavour to its community, promotes the work as best practice while demonstrating the hard work and commitment of the 2 ReUse project staff, volunteers, Peterhead Projects Board of Directors and members and all partners involved. I’m sure you will agree that this award clearly shows that the Peterhead community have pushed forward and supported a community need and community led provision while promoting the Big Society Concept, it’s a fantastic achievement and we are all delighted “.
